Smoke Guide

Opening a Cigar

So it begins.

Before lighting a cigar the end has to be cut off. In this, the cut should be as clean and even as possible for a perfect draw. You can chose between two different kinds of cuts, the first being the guillotine-cut (the head of the cigar is partially cut off), notch-cut (the cigar is nicked in a v-form at the end) or pierced (a small hole is cut into the cigar's head). Make sure to only work with precise and sharpened blades, otherwise the wrapper might get damaged.

Make sure not to remove the band immediately, there is a chance that it is affixed to the wrapper with adhesive. Wait a short while until the cigar has warmed up during the process of smoking, which will soften the adhesive.

Lighting a Cigar

It becomes hot.

To light a cigar you should consider using only matche (spills made from cedarwood) or a gas lighter. Using vestas, fluid lighters or even candles is highly unrecommended, since they can alter the taste of the cigar.

Do not hold the foot of the cigar directly into the flame; turn the cigar slowly above the flame until you see that the foot is covered in ash. Now take the cigar between your lips and take slow puffs until the foot is evenly lit.

Even the most well lit cigar can go out. In this case, dust off the ash, blow through the cigar and repeat the process of lighting it.

Smoking a Cigar

Just enjoy.

The best results in taste are achieved when the cigar is smoked slowly. Taste and flavour are carried by the smoke and absorbed by the palate. Simply keep the smoke locked up inside your mouth for a couple of seconds and enjoy the flavour of the blend (never inhale!).

The ash of the cigar, about 3-4 cm, is best gently twisted off, never tapped off. The taste of most cigars changes the shorter the barrel gets. When the cigar turns hotter, stronger and sour in the last third of the barrel it is best put aside.

A cigar's smoking time depends on your smoking habits and the length of the cigar. Do not grind our cigar out but allow it to go out on its own.

Storage of a Cigar

How to do it right.

Cigars are fine natural products, breathing through their wrapper. Even after years they do not lose their unique features, granted they are stored right. A perfectly stored cigar has a soft shine to it, is gentle and give in to the most delicate pressure. Especially heat, direct sunlight and smells are to be kept away from the cigar (never keep a cigar in the fridge). The best way to store cigars is in a so called Humidor, a box maintaining a relative humidity level of 65 - 70 percent and a temperature of approximately 20 degrees celsius.

Make sure to ventilate your Humidor regularly and only use destilled water for the integrated humidifying system, since tap water can cause mould to grow. In case of mould infestation the cigar has to be removed. However, don't confuse mould with a white-grey fluff that can appear because of ongoing fermentation inside the Humidor. This fluff can be removed with a soft cloth.
