Growing Areas of Cigar-Tobacco

Brazil

Tobaccos from Brasil, coming from the regions of Arapiraca and Reconcavo (Bahia), unite body and indulgence. In Brasil, tobacco farming is based on a century-long tradition.

Different to the usually practiced single leaf-harvesting and drying, Reconcavo is known for picking the entire plant and drying it as a whole. This method enhances the development of the aroma, which makes Reconcavo tobaccos intensely spicy, whereas tobaccos from Arapiraca are milder.

Unprocessed tobacco from Brasil is high in export, however, Brasil itself does not produce many cigars. Cigars made from Brazilian tobaccos with shortfiller are mainly produced in Europe.

Dominican Republic

With its many brands of cigars the Dominican Republic is one of the largest producers of cigars in the world today. The climatic conditions, resembling those given in Cuba, and the knowledge of many exiled Cubans ensure that Santa Domingo produces some of the finest handmade Premium Cigars.

Real-valley and Cibao-valley put out the finest long leaf tobaccos, mainly used as long fillers fillers, whereas tobacco used for the wrapper usually are imported from the United States. Dominican cigars tend to be mild to aromatic as far as taste is concerned, yet always sporting a rich flavour.

Honduras

Honduras is west of the Dominican Republic. Honduras is also one of the most important producers of cigars. The first cigar manufactories here were founded in 18th century but in Honduras, too, the real reason for the boom of the tobacco industry can be traced back to some exiled Cubans, who have cultivated and developed the farming and processing of tobacco.

In Lopan-, Ulla- and Chamelecon Valley in the Danli region one of the most aromatic tobaccos in the world is grown. With the "Zino Mouton Cadet" line the true rise of Honduran cigar began and led to international recognition. Since then Honduras grew to be the second largest manufacturer of cigars wordwide, with many Premium-brands.

Indonesia (Sumatra and Java)

On Sumatra in the Medan region and on Java in the Besuki and Vorstlanden region the cultivation of tobacco is a century-long tradition. The mild yet aromatic tobaccos can be used either as fillers, binders or wrappers. One of the most expensive wrapper leaves, the light "Deli-Priming" originates in the Medan region. The fertile soil, partly vulcanic, partly sandy-clayey combined with the hot-humid climate are ideal conditions for the high quality tobaccos.

Cigars made from Indonesian tobacco with shortfillers do not need any humidifying even after a long time in storage. Indonesian raw tobacco are mostly exported to Europe. P.G.C. Hajenius in Amsterdam is one of those manifacturers, who processes Indonesian tobacco. His Sumatra-series with the finest wrappers are praised beyond the borders of the Netherlands.

Canary Islands

The special climate and the vulcanic origin made it possible for the Canary Islands to pose perfect conditions for manufacturing cigars. This led to some manufacturers successfully settling on the Canaries after the Fidel Castro's accession to power and the resulting emigration wave.

The island La Palma is the centre of the Canarian manufacturing of cigars today. With their extraordinary tobacco and its distinctive aroma as well as tobacco imported from Cuba and the United States cigars are handmade – in this, the Canarian tobacco is used for as the filler.

Cuba

Cuba started producing cigars in the 18th century. World wide, Cuban tobacco is said to be the best thing to happen to a cigar. The reputation of the Havanna-cigar is mainly based on the extraordinary natural circumstances of the island, its mild climate and its fertile soil. In addition to that the island is home to Cuban tobacco farmers with unbelievable knowledge and skill.

"Vuelta Abajo", a valley in the province of Pinar del Rio is an excellent region for cultivating tobacco, it is famous for the Premium-Quality of its wrapper-, binder- and filler tobaccos. Apart from it there are other growing regions: Semi Vuelta, Partido, Oriente and Remedios. Meticulous selection and balanced blends of the leaves adorn the Havanna with an extraordinary flavour and a delicious aroma.

Nicaragua

For the longest time Nicaraguan cigars - right behind Havannas from Cuba - were seen as the best cigars worldwide. In the two main regions of cultivation, Jalapa- and Esteli-Valley, both showing as ideal conidtions as Cuba, sweet, rich aromatic filler-, binder- and wrapper-leaves are growing. The multifaceted taste forms a league of its own. Nicaragua offers a constantly rising number of rich, aromatic Premium-cigars.
